What I Learned At Marie Forleo Live.
“The world needs that special gift that only you have.” – Marie Forleo
As many of you would know, I’m really passionate about self-learning and investing in my personal development. Last week I had the privilege of attending Marie Forleo Live in Sydney. Marie Forleo is someone who I seriously look up to and whose career I admire.
As a born and raised Jersey girl with nothing more than a passion, a laptop and a dream, Marie Forleo has created a digital empire that inspires millions across the world. She is a #1 New York Times Best Selling Author, the star of the award-winning show MarieTV and the host of The Marie Forleo Podcast with over 48 million views and 9 million downloads respectively. Even Oprah has described Marie Forleo as being “the next thought leader of our generation.”
When Business Chicks announced that Marie would be speaking in Sydney, I knew this was an event not to be missed. Here are 3 key lessons I learned at Marie Forleo Live:
Marie describes the the phrase everything is figuratable as being the most powerful driving force in her life. It has helped Marie to end a physically abusive relationship. In college, it helped her win highly prized work-study positions. It has also helped Marie to land every job she’s ever had – from bartending at the most coveted restaurants in Manhattan, to trading own the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. It is what provided her with the audacity to start a business at 23 and turn it into a multi-million dollar, socially conscious education and media company.
Marie says that no matter what you’re facing, you have what it takes to figure anything out and become the person you’re meant to be.
There are 3 rules to the figureatable philosophy:
Rule No. 1: All problems or dreams are figureatable.
Rule No. 2: If a problem isn’t figureatable, it’s not a problem. It’s a fact of life e.g. death, gravity, certain laws of nature, taxes.
Rule No. 3: You may not care enough to solve this particular problem or reach this particular dream. That’s ok. Go find something that you do care deeply about and circle back to rule No. 1.
Marie spoke about two four-letter words that will annihilate your excuses. Think about how often people say some version of “I can’t get up and workout every day.” Or “I can’t take the class / learn the language / start the venture etc. because I don’t have the time.”
Marie shares the notion that 99% of the time we say we “can’t” to something, “can’t” is a euphemism for won’t. When we say we “won’t” do something, it means that we don’t really want to do it. So really, you “don’t want to get up and workout every day.” “You don’t want to take the class / learning the language / start the venture etc.”
When you say the word’s “I can’t”, stop and check yourself and ask if you can’t or if you just don’t want to. Saying you don’t want to do something doesn’t make you bad or lazy. It makes you honest. And it frees up your bandwidth to do the work that you really want to do.
There were so many incredible words of wisdom and golden nuggets shared by Marie Forleo on the night. A few too many to share in this blog post! If you are interested in hearing more, I highly recommend listening to Marie’s Everything is Figureatable talk on Oprah’s SuperSoul Conversations. I also recommend grabbing a copy of Marie Forleo’s #1 New York Times Bestselling book Everything is Figurateable.
