“Investing in yourself is the best investment you could ever make. It will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.” – Robin Sharma.
It’s no secret that I am a huge advocate of personal development. Whenever I’ve invested time, money or other resources into investing in myself, it’s paid an ROI 10 times the initial investment. Personal development not only improves the quality of my life, however it also enables me to live out my life’s purpose by helping others to get out of their own way and achieve their goals.
In this blog post, I provide a personal development update for November 2020. I share the details of what I’m reading, listening to and working on.
I recently finished reading Ramit Sethi’s New York Time’s Bestseller, I Will Teach You To Be Rich. In this book, Ramit shares his framework for wealth creation and simplified the seemingly complex world of investing. His writing style is brutally honest yet hilarious, making this one of the most entertaining finance books I’ve ever read.
One of my goals for 2020 was to improve my influencing and negotiation skills, and this book is probably the best book on negotiation I’ve ever read. Chris Voss was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was also the FBI’s hostage negotiation representative for The National Security Council’s Hostage Working Group. In this book. Chris divulges the strategies he used to negotiate with terrorists and criminals, and how these strategies can be applied to every day life.
I just finished reading Janine Garner’s Be Brilliant, and I absolutely loved it. Janine is a global thought leader on powerful networking, collaboration and transformational leadership. She is obsessed with unleashing brilliance in individuals, teams and companies, helping others reclaim and reignite their influence. I was lucky enough to meet Janine at my good friend Anna’s Female Frontier Leadership Weekend, where Janine was the keynote speaker. Janine’s energy, boldness and brilliance is undeniable. In this book, she shares her framework for slowing down, owning who you truly are and unleashing your inner brilliance. I am so thrilled that Janine came on as a guest on The Boss in Heels Podcast, with the episode scheduled to be released at 6am AEST on 19 November 2020 – stay tuned!
Podcasts are an essential part of my daily routine and I listen to them while driving, walking or doing things around home. The main podcasts I have been listening to lately are:
I was recently promoted into a Group General Manager of Human Resources, and as part of this new role, thought there would be merit in undertaking Executive Coaching Sessions. I have commenced a customised program with an Executive Coach and will be attending 9 x 1:1 sessions over the next 12 months. This program has been designed to improve my executive communication skills and influencing skills.
There is such enormous value in working with a coach, and if it is something you have been considering, I recommend it highly. The lessons you will learn and skills you will develop are invaluable.
In addition to reading Janine Garner’s book and having her as an extraordinary guest on the podcast, I have also signed up for her Be Brilliant Advantage Program. Janine just speaks to me, and I feel very closely aligned to her mission and values.
The Be Brilliant Advantage Program takes the learnings from her book a step further, and provides practical guidance on the 4 key pillars to unlocking brilliance:
