How to Write a Resume Like a Pro

Writing your resume can be one of the most daunting and challenging tasks when looking for a new role. An up to date resume is something that all professionals should possess.  So how do you write a resume like a pro? Below is an outline of my key tips and items to incorporate:

1. CONTACT DETAILS

Ensure your contact details are at the top of your resume. This includes your full name, number, email address and location. Full home address and DOB are not relevant and therefore not required.

2. PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Outline your professional profile with a simple tag line summarising your experience and skills. For example, ‘Highly motivated individual offering knowledge and experience in customer service, account management and conflict resolution’.

3. CORE SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Dot point your core skills and competencies, for example:

• Leadership Skills
• Customer Service Skills
• Intermediate Microsoft Office Skills

4. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Outline your past roles and career history in chronological order, from most to least recent. Under each role, include your top 2-3 accomplishments and your top 5-6 responsibilities.

5. EDUCATION

Outline your education and qualifications, starting with your highest qualification first. Education can cover university degree, TAFE certificates, High School Certificate, Industry Courses and other Professional Training.

6. REFERENCES

Under References, state ‘references are available upon request.’ This way, you can contact and prepare your referees, prior to them receiving an unexpected phone call.

7. GRAMMAR & FORMAT

Ensure your resume is free from any spelling or grammatical errors. Whilst spell check is an important tool, I would recommend asking at least 2-3 trusted peers or associates to review your resume.
