How to Set Goals According to 3 Successful Entrepreneurs

2017 is here! The first week of the New Year is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year that was, and to learn how to set goals for the year ahead.

Come January 1 we all hear that “New Year, New Me” talk, but how do you actually stay committed to achieving your goals? Here is what three of the world’s most credible and successful entrepreneurs have to say…

1. OPRAH WINFREY: SET HIGH GOALS

In 1987, Oprah said “I always knew I’d be a millionaire by age thirty-two. In fact, I am going to be the richest black woman in America.” Fast forward to 2017, and Oprah is now not only the richest black woman in America, but one of the richest women in the world. Oprah has made her fortune by setting clear and ambitious goals both personally and professionally. In order to become successful, Oprah says one must set goals, and set them high.

2. SIR RICHARD BRANSON: WRITE IT DOWN!

Sir Richard Branson’s message on goal setting in simple yet powerful- write it down! Carry around a notebook and write down every single idea you have, not matter how big or small it may be.

3. TONY ROBBINS: GOALS ARE DREAMS WITH A DEADLINE

Tony Robbins has created a system for creating empowering and effective goals, and this starts with organising your goals into the following four buckets:

• Personal development goals
• Career/ business/ economic goals
• Toys/ adventure goals
• Contribution goals

Under each category, ask yourself the following questions:

• What is everything you would like to improve in each category?
• What is the timeline to achieve these goals?
• Choose the most important one year goal under each category, and write a paragraph about it.

HOW TO SET GOALS

I personally find that writing down my goals and tying it to a deadline helps to keep me motivated. I write my goals on a list on a piece of A4 paper and pin it up somewhere (such as in my bedroom) where it is the first thing I see when I wake up each morning, and the last thing I see before I go to sleep. This way, I am constantly being reminded of the personal and professional goals I am working towards.
