5 Ways To Bring Inner Peace Into Your Life.
“If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. As soon as you honour the present moment, unhappiness and struggle will dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. When you act out of the present moment awareness, whatever you do becomes imbued with a sense of quality, care and love – even the most simple action.” – Eckhart Tolle.
As I have continued to invest in myself and my personal development, one of, if not the most important aspects has been working on being more present, and bringing inner peace into my life. Gone are the days of conflict and drama. With each year that passes, I begin to realise more and more the value of inner peace, and living in the present moment.
One of the most influential and important books I have read is Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth. This book has changed my life. Since reading A New Earth, I have learned to live more in the present moment, and not in the past or the future. When you truly this understand concept, you begin to realise the present moment is all we ever have. You begin to cherish the now. And begin to truly live in the now.
There are a few practices I have put in place to bring more inner peace into my life.
Practicing mindfulness and meditation has been one of the most impactful practices I’ve developed. Every morning, the first thing I do after I make the bed and drink some water, is to do some breath work. I recently discovered Wim Hof’s breathing techniques, and they are incredible. Practicing this breathing exercise first thing in the morning provides me with significantly more energy throughout the course of the day.
Some of the known benefits of the Wim Hof Method include:
The Wim Hof Method is also linked to reducing symptoms of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, sarcoidosis, vasculitis, and several autoimmune diseases. This practice takes just 10 minutes to complete.
Once I have completed 10 minutes of breath work, I then jump onto the Headspace App. I use Headspace each morning for 10 minutes of meditation. Practicing meditation provides me with a sense of calm and control in my day. It also helps me to practice being in the present moment, and ultimately brings more peace into my life.
Two of the most influential books I have read in regards to being present have been written by Eckhart Tolle:
If living in the present moment is something you are struggling with, I highly recommend reading both of these books.
I always thought I was a grateful person. However it has only been in the last 12 months that I have introduced gratitude as part of my morning routine and really felt the benefits. Once I have completed my morning meditation and breathing exercises, I open my journal and write down at least three things I feel grateful for in that moment.
My experience with this exercise is when I first started writing the things I felt grateful for, I would start with three general things, such as my health, my family and my job. Now when I complete this exercise, I rarely stop at three things I feel grateful for… It is more like eight or ten. And what I write has become much more specific with time.
This is truly a beautiful practice, and is a way of bringing more inner peace into your life. What you focus on expands. When you focus on the good, you invite more goodness to come into your life.
How we choose to perceive the world and our experiences in life, are entirely up to us. Two people could be dealt the exact same set of cards – one focuses on the positives, and the other on the negatives. Who do you think will take those cards and win? Who do you think will be happier or more at peace?
I have always been a half glass full kind of person, and choose to see the good in any given situation. When I have had to deal with tougher times, I have shifted my focus from “why is this happening to me?” to “why is this happening for me?” What is the lesson here? What is this experience trying to teach me?
I have also learned the power of learning to focus on the things that are within my control, and to let go what I can’t. This has been an incredibly empowering and liberating mental shift. It has brought more inner peace into my life.
Who you choose to surround yourself with, has a significant influence on the person you become and the kind of life that you live. As Jim Rohn so wisely said, “you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
Surrounding yourself with people who have positive energy and are drama-free, will have a positive impact on you. If you surround yourself with irate, drama-filled people, that will also have an impact on you.
I am very selective with who I spend my time with, and the kind of energy I want to be around. I know this can be challenging, particularly when it comes to long-standing friends and family members. However, try and minimise your interactions with people who create chaos in your life. Protect your energy. No one should cost you your inner peace.
I am a big believer in taking the necessary time to self-care every day. Self-care can be anything that you want it to be. Enjoying some time in the sunshine, taking a long bath, sitting in the sun, enjoying a coffee or tea, reading, pampering. Anything that makes you feel good and brings you a sense of joy, calm and inner peace.
If you struggle to find time in your day, schedule in 20 minutes to self-care, just as you would with any other appointment. I am a big believer that we have to be good to ourselves before we can be good to others. If you are interested in reading more about self-care and how to develop a self-care routine, you can read my post here.
