5 ways to win over your boss.

If you are not meeting the minimum requirements of your role, how do you think this is going to be perceived by your boss? If your boss asks something of you, you need to just get it done. Do not wait for your boss to keep reminding you to submit that report or finish off that project. Make sure you are doing your job well and meeting all deadlines. If there is an issue or a delay with something, make sure you communicate this and explain the reason for the delay. The less your boss has to focus on your daily tasks, the more they can focus on accomplishing their own.
Get to know who your boss is as a person. What are their preferences? How often do they expect to receive updates from you? What are the things they want to be involved in, and what are the things they are happy to completely let go? Understanding these elements means you are able to manage the expectations of your boss, leading to a more positive and productive relationship.
It is a real skill to pre-empt the needs of your boss and those around you. A positive attitude and demonstrated initiative are among the top qualities look for when interviewing someone to be a part of my team. I personally cannot stand employees who just want to do the absolute bare minimum. Try doing something extra. Does your boss look stressed out? Ask them if there is something you can take off their plate. Exceeding expectations and being willing to go above and beyond do not go unnoticed.

Your boss not only needs to trust you to get the job done, however they also need to know that you are loyal to them on a personal level. If you have an issue with something, do not address it publicly or talk about it with your peers. Give your boss the respect of talking about it privately, otherwise it could have the potential to really damage your relationship.
Instead of constantly going to your boss with problems, try putting some thought into finding solutions. This demonstrates you are capable of making sound decisions within the scope of your role. When your boss knows they are able to count on you to find solutions, it will increase your chances of gaining further responsibility and other opportunities down the line.
